This Sunday is a very special day! It’s Mother’s Day! Everyone should have it marked on our calendars because we all have a Mom! Some lucky ones have more than one mom – step-mom, adoptive/biological mom, foster mom, strong woman figure who is like your 2nd mom, even mothers-in-law count.
So – how are you going to celebrate this special woman (or women) who has given so much to you and who might still be contributing significantly to your life right now? Before shelter in place due to the coronavirus, we might have planned a special brunch or dinner at Mom’s favorite restaurant. Or treated Mom to a day of pampering and relaxation at the spa.
While those options are not available right now, here are some other ways to celebrate Mother’s Day, pandemic style!
- If you don’t live with her, call her, especially if you haven’t called in the last 24 hours. Moms usually love hearing from their kids on a regular basis. If you can’t call, send a text or maybe even a letter or card, if you’ve got an “old school” mom.
- Make something – whether it’s breakfast in bed, a home made card or a bouquet from the flowers in the back yard, most moms love knowing that you put some thought and work into making a gift for her. Bonus points if you make something that is useful, beautiful and/or pertains to something that she enjoys. With many shops closed and online shops experiencing shipping delays, a homemade bookmark for your favorite book-lover mom, may be the way to go.
- Clean something – combine with the “make something” gift to really show Mom how much you love her! Whether it’s the kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms, living room, her car, yourselves (when was the last time you took a bath? Today is Thursday…) – Moms love the smell and look of sparkly clean anything.
- Gift certificates – many storefront shops and restaurants are closed but may still be selling gift certificates online for when they open again. Buying a gift card from a local business helps them stay in business and be ready to open when it’s safe to do so.
If you still want to celebrate Mom with a brunch or other meal, PennLive has list of restaurants in the area that are doing special Mother’s Day take out meals. Many of our regular food tour vendors are also doing contactless take out or delivery that would make for a delicious Mother’s Day meal. The Vegetable Hunter has a vegan brunch menu available for your health conscious or vegan Mom. Knead Slice Shop and Pastorante are also open for delivery or take out.
And of course, don’t forget all the yumminess you can find at the Broad Street Market – our favorite food vendors will be there on Saturday for take out orders.
No matter what you decide, your Mom will love it! And you, of course, since you were always her favorite anyway….
